Scientific Use of 3D Visual Seafloor Reconstructions

We will be hosting the following workshop:
Scientific Use of 3D Visual Seafloor Reconstructions
at JAMSTEC Yokosuka, on 12th March 2015 (Thursday).
The aim of the workshop is to discuss how to use 3D visual maps of the seafloor to help interpret the distribution of seafloor habitats in the Tohoku region, and in hydrothermal vent fields in the Okinawa trough.
The workshop will be split into two parts, where the first part of the workshop will cover the scientific goals for habitat mapping in these regions, and then introduce technology that may be useful to help achieve these goals. In the second part of the workshop, participants will split into smaller groups to identify the major scientific goals for each application area, discuss strategies concerning how to apply the technology to the scientific goals, and identify gaps in the technology that need to be filled in order to gain a better understanding of the habitats being investigated. It is hoped that some of the ideas that come up in the workshop will form the basis of future collaborations and funding proposals.
During the workshop, Prof. Stefan Williams of the Marine robotics group, Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR), University of Sydney, will introduce the technology developed by his group to map coral reefs off the Australian coast using underwater robots as part of the Australian Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) program. His talk will discuss the experience of sustained activity in this field since 2007, the software developed to deliver data products to the Australian science community, and the application of the technology to other related fields.
Further details about the work done by his group at the ACFR can be found at the following links.
